What is GHB Liquid?
A central nervous system (CNS) depressant known as GHB, or Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (C4H8O3), is popularly known as a “club drug” or “date rape” substance. Teens and young adults frequently use GHB, which is often mixed with alcohol, at nightclubs, parties, and “raves” (all-night dance parties). Some people report feeling calm, euphoric, and with an increase in sex drive after abusing GHB. Some of the negative effects that may occur include perspiration, unconsciousness, nausea, hallucinations, forgetfulness, and coma.
Pharmacology
In the brain, GHB exerts its effects via two distinct receptor sites: the GABAB and particular GHB receptors. The central nervous system depressant, stimulant, and psychomotor impairment effects of GHB are caused by its action at these two receptor sites.
The liver is responsible for the metabolism of almost 95% of GHB, and the compound has a half-life of 30–60 minutes. Kidney excretion of the parent drug is a meagre 5%. Because GHB has a very short half-life, it may be challenging to detect it in urine after 24 hours.

GHB Use In Pregnancy
It is unknown what effects GHB use has on human pregnancies. Using GHB while pregnant is not a good idea. Anyone using GHB who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor right away.
Treatment Option for GHB Abuse
There is a lack of data on how to treat GHB addiction or any other club drug. Outpatient treatment and education are options for some GHB users who do not have a physical dependence on the drug. People who use this substance regularly may experience severe withdrawal symptoms when they go through detox, so they need to be closely monitored by medical professionals and given supportive care. From seven to fourteen days, patients may be admitted to the hospital.
Patients may try to self-detoxify by using benzodiazepines or alcohol due to the severe withdrawal effects that they report. The withdrawal symptoms, respiratory depression, coma, and death that can result from using these extra substances are real. Although they should only be used under medical supervision, detoxification may necessitate the use of certain medications, such as benzodiazepines, antihypertensive drugs, and anticonvulsants. A case report suggests baclofen as a potential remedy for GHB withdrawal.
Further study is required to determine the efficacy of behavioural therapy in the treatment of GHB use or addiction.

Health Hazards Due to GHB Use
Euphoria, increased sex drive, and tranquility are reported positive effects of GHB abuse. However, immediate negative effects of GHB use may include:
- sweating
- loss of consciousness
- nausea
- auditory and visual hallucinations
- headaches
- vomiting
- exhaustion
- sluggishness
- amnesia
- confusion
- clumsiness
Repeated GHB use can cause addiction. Sleeplessness, anxiety, tremors, sweating, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and psychosis may occur during withdrawal. Serious withdrawal can be incapacitating.
Combined use with alcohol, other sedatives or hypnotics (barbiturates, benzodiazepines), and CNS depressants may cause nausea, vomiting, aspiration, and dangerous CNS and respiratory (breathing) depression.
Even without alcohol or other drugs, high doses of GHB can cause sedation, seizures, coma, respiratory depression, and death. ED visits for club drug use usually involve marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy, or Rohypnol.
Emergency room doctors may not know GHB abuse has occurred when a patient arrives. Urine detection may be difficult due to the drug’s short half-life. Emergency overdose treatment focuses on supportive care and airway preservation.
